Volunteer Testimonials
I truly enjoy my weekly work with Meals on Wheels. As a kitchen volunteer I love putting together the meals for delivery. We are a team, and we enjoy working together. As a driver I get a great deal of joy and fulfillment from delivering healthy meals to my clients. I love sharing a few words with each of them, and consider them my friends. I get much more from my clients than they get from me! By donating a bit of my time each week I’m able to give something back to the community, which is important to me.
I recently volunteered to be a driver for Fluvanna Meals on Wheels. I’m so happy I did. MOW is very well organized and a wonderful service to the community. I am enjoying delivering meals and getting to know the people on my route. The clients are always very appreciative and they just make me smile!
I feel that working with MOW is the best activity that I have ever been involved with. It is very rewarding. No matter what I am doing. The end is that we are helping a lot of people each day we volunteer. Kitchen work doesn’t seem like work. We are just getting the food ready to be delivered. Everyone has the same focus. No issues no conflicts. Driving you have contact with people who need what we give. They are thankful. Some like to talk and share. We get to listen and make friends. It is all good and rewarding to all involved.
I have been a MOW volunteer from the beginning of the program in Fluvanna. A friend asked me to volunteer and thought it might be a good fit for me and seniors. I work full time & have little time to myself. This gives me a lunch break once a week & a reason to leave the office and look forward to making a senior’s day. I have a smile on my face from beginning to end of the delivery route. I get to meet new friends & their families. To see the joy a hot meal brings to these seniors make’s my Wednesday’s.
I believe a hot meal is very important to our friends but it does not stop there. I believe sometimes our drivers provide the only contact that our friends receive that week. I believe that loneliness is an epidemic that surrounds our older friends and they love and look forward to our visits, so important, the secure feeling they have that someone cares and are looking in on them.
Loneliness is one of the causes of depression and effects our older friends health, both mental and physical.
Our visits are not only a blessing to them, but certainly a blessing to all who take part in this much needed mission.
I have lived most of my life in Fluvanna. It has been a great place to live and to raise my son. This is a way to give back to this community and to provide help to those who need a little extra.
Working in the kitchen for Meals on Wheels is really a fun time. The volunteers are all very nice and we are all serving a wonderful purpose, providing meals for those who are in need.
I have been delivering meals on wheels for about 8 years now. This is one of those rare activities in which everybody wins.
Our clients win because they receive a warm meal and some conversation every day.
Our client’s caregivers and families win because they know someone is keeping an eye on their loved ones.
Our community wins because keeping our elderly and disabled healthy helps control costs and contributes to the overall well being of all.
I win because I get to meet great clients, learn about their interesting life stories and also get to drive around 40 or 50 miles of beautiful Fluvanna countryside!!! Hope to keep doing it for a long time to come!
I was amazed at the number of people who are involved in the MOW service from administration, kitchen and drivers. There was a need for a program like this in Fluvanna and a group of caring people got together and put into motion a plan for providing a hot meal to those in need. I feel blessed that I can be a part of volunteering whether driving or working in the kitchen. My greeting when knocking on a door, Morning Meals on Wheels, makes my day when I receive a smile back and a Thank You.
I feel rewarded being able to give back to our community in such a valuable way.
Just want to let you know that the kitchen team rocked it today! Not a single one of us was a regular, all subs, but I feel like it went as fluidly as ever. Jello and pasta salad to pack up and put in the cool bags with milk and condiments; burgers, buns and cooked carrots in the hot bags—a lot of portioning out but the team worked really well together. In case you talk to any of the subs today let them know they were a pleasure to work with and I’m impressed!
